Ten Years!

I just got an email from an old boyfriend, with whom I moved to North Carolina ten years ago today. I actually thought it had been longer, but still- ten years! It feels like lifetimes.
We moved sight unseen into a huge old Triple-A style farmhouse owned by the Ruritan club (I still don't know exactly what they do...) at the crossroads of the town of Silk Hope. The only other things in sight were the school, the fire station, and a tiny convenience store. And cows. (The picture is from a book called, appropriately, "Silk Hope" which is set in that farmhouse.)
We had no furniture except for a futon and the table that came with the house. And we were poor massage school students who also worked full time, so the house stayed unfurnished...big, cavernous rooms void of anything save for a plant here and a pillow there. We loved it though. I still have the weathervane that fell during a storm.
Every spring there was a festival in the field across the street- The Silk Hope Old Fashioned Farmers' Day and Tractor Pull. I remember feeling like the locals were speaking another language entirely, especially since I had lived in New England for most of my life. Now that southern drawl flows out of my mouth on command, and probably even slips in when I'm not trying. It makes me laugh to remember trying to understand what people were trying to say to me, and how stupid they must have thought I was for not comprehending their simple sentences!
I wonder what the next ten years will bring.
